The bid has always been considered the much maligned “necessary evil” to getting gigs. It’s really all in your perspective. As soon as you step away from the spreadsheet stereotype that is associated with bidding, you’ll find a world of creative thinking and deal making that can make the process of bidding an interesting step to getting on the set. The key is to think like a Hollywood agent. When dealing with talent agencies, locations and rental houses, there is always a deal to be made. Digital Workshop: Archiving Workflow w/ Michael Britt
Saturday September 27, 2008

Archiving Workflow with Michael Britt

What do you do with hundreds of raw files after each shoot? Do you quickly get them color corrected, edited, keyworded, processed and delivered? Are the images safely and redundantly stored for the long haul? Are your hero images easy to find and retrieve or does it take you hours to seek out a single image in your archive? In today's competitive photography market any failure in your digital image workflow can be costly in terms of time, money and client relationships.

Come join us on Saturday September 27th as Michael Britt shows us how his highly respected digital capture company Image Mechanics manages a simple, scalable and cost effective archiving system that has been used to manage thousands of images per week without ever losing a single file. He will discuss filenaming and keywording conventions along with shoot implementation strategies that take advantage of Adobe Lightrooms metatdata ingestion tools. This strategy goes hand in hand with the Image Mechanics philosophy of doing a little work up front to save yourself hours on the back end. See how to organize each shoot into its own Lightroom database and then how to merge/manage with a larger hero shots catalog. These techniques in combination with a cost effective off-line archiving system will ensure data integrity and ease your post production workload.

Learn when and why to use the Adobe DNG format, when to burn DVD's or Blue Ray discs and which hard drive systems are best for photographers. Firewire, eSATA, USB and fiber advantages/disadvantages will also be explained along with a discussion about RAIDs, NAS and new specifications like SCSI over ethernet. Take the mystery and expense out of archiving by attending this informative seminar from a leader in digital photography workflow.

Masking and Compositing:

Come join us Saturday, September 29th, as Dennis Dunbar will lead us on a journey through the intricacies and nuances of masking and compositing. As many of you know Masking is one of the most basic jobs and important jobs in working on digital imaging. There are as many ways of generating a mask as there are images. Which ways work simply and easily? What makes a good mask? And how do you use them? (Can you really have several masks for one layer???

Then we’ll get into Compositing. Many images, such as the movie posters Dennis often works on, are obviously composited images, but so are many images that look as if they were captured in a single shot. The magic lies in bringing several images together in one seamless image. Yet, how do you bring images from disparate sources together to form that magical final image? Dennis will show you how to blend images with different color casts, levels of noise and sharpness together to create a seamless composite.

This session promises to be an informative and interesting exploration designed to help propel you to the “Next Level” in your own digital experience. So whether you’re a beginner, or an experienced photoshopper come join us at Anthony Nex’s studio for the latest in our series of Digital Seminars.

Digital Railroad Education Workshop:Breaking into the Marketplace

Welcome to the Digital age...where assignments (and fees) are down and competition is up. How can today's pro photographer adjust, identify and take advantage of the income opportunities left available to them?

Whether we as pros like it or not, "Stock Photography" has become the major source of imagery for today's photo buyers, designers and art directors, and in order to thrive and survive every pro photographer, no matter what their specialty, needs to understand this market and how they could possibly integrate it into their business model.

This fast paced seminar starts with an historical overview of the Stock Photo industry and progresses through the changes this buying (and selling) model has faced over the years, bringing us to where we are today. Throughout the seminar we will examine the various opportunities that photographers in today’s market have to create new incremental revenue streams.

Featured is Digitalrailroad.net Marketplace (www.digitalrailroad.net), the recently launched and highly acclaimed new image sales service that's poised to turn the industry on its head by returning control, opportunity and profit back into the hands of photographers - where it belongs!

Saturday October 21, 2006
9am - 1pm
Anthony Nex Studio 3221 Hutchinson Ave., Los Angeles

DEVELOPING RAW IMAGES with George Simian.

In a live demo led by George Simian, RAW images, captured live with a Canon 1Ds Mk2, will be processed by the 4 leading RAW processing software applications: Canon Digital Photo Pro, Adobe Camera RAW, Phase One Capture One, and Apple Aperture. The resulting files will be closely examined for ultimate image quality.

Workflows will then be compared: a multi-application sequence versus the single-application sequences offered by Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture. Quality, flexibility, and efficiency of the workflows will be tested, with all real-world problems and bottlenecks unmasked.

The concerns and interests of the participants will guide the direction and depth of the presentation - all questions will be answered, though different conclusions may be drawn.

Advanced Masking and Compositing
Saturday, June 17, 2006
9am-1pm
Dreamways Studio 1107 N. El Centro, Hollywood 90038

In this session we're focusing on one of the most important tools a digital artist uses in creating digital masterpieces - Masking. Whether the job calls for changing a background or for creating a complicated composite of several images it all begins with the mask. A well made mask can be used to strip a part of an image out of it's background or it can be used to control any manipulation the artist may want to create. While every image is unique there are a few tricks and techniques the pros use every day to not only change backgrounds or control effects but to combine many disparate images into one, believable combination that defines a new reality.

Join us on Saturday June 17th when 3 digital pros, Lisa Carney, Ken Justice and Dennis Dunbar will share some of their favorite methods for creating effective masks and for combining many images into a new believable reality.

APA-LA/LACC Portfolio Open House

Bring your book. Bring your cards. Bring the love.

This year, let's commit to making great portfolios for ourselves. Our April event kicks off this effort by bringing creatives and advertising photographers together for networking and making great spec ads.

We'll have a look at the 2006 Obie Awards winning creative, which will inspire us to go on to do some great spec work. And we'll have two opportunities in 2006 for showing the work we do: on July 27, we'll join the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in their annual celebration of outdoor advertising (we'll be projecting your spec billboard creative at the event), and in December, we'll show your spec fashion ads at our Holiday Fashion Show.

Directors and producers will also be on hand at the event to talk about making spec spots, so bring your spec scripts and boards. It'll just be a real spectravaganza in every way.

Admission: LACC & APA-LA members free Click here to reserve your place. (Please buy a $10 ticket to hold your place—you will get a $10 rebate.)

Getting consistent, predictable color is one of the greatest challenges we face in the age of digital images. Does Color Management hold the key to solving this challenge? Come and see what our panel of experts has to share and learn just what Color Management can and cannot do to solve this persistent riddle.

In addition to exploring Color Management´s possibilities we´ll cover calibrating/profiling monitors, and printers. We´ll also discuss how to set up PhotoShop so you can get your in-house printer to mimic an expensive Kodak Approval, or MatchPrint device to predict final color so you can give your clients prints they can rely on.
